I found a treasure in my mother’s recipe box. This box is filled with recipes that she cut from magazines, copied from friends, inherited from my Grandmothers. I can picture her as a young wife eagerly copying every last instruction from the women that she admired. I can picture her taking down the ingredients and details and imagining the smile it would put on my Dad’s face. I honestly don’t remember all that much about her cooking. She died when I was eight and the few years before that saw a lot of our meals prepared and delivered by friends and family. She was too sick to cook. But this recipe card is dated 1986. Years before I was born. Years before she got sick. Years before she had to surrender to the idea that the smile of contentment that food placed on my father’s face would be a gift from the women that loved her enough to take on the joy of nourishing her family. In 1986, she must have sat down at the kitchen table with my Grandmother, her husband’s mother, the woman who had traveled to that kitchen table from Ecuador and brought her love of cooking and Jesus and people over miles and decades and generations. As I read it, I can see my mother’s long fingers writing out the words. I can hear my grandmother’s accent lilt and bend over each step. It’s just an ordinary recipe card but it’s the ordinary objects and moments that build a life. The recipes and day dreams and moments with family. It’s the sharing of food and lessons and time. It’s the small moments that speak of transcendent love. My Mommy never got to sit down with her daughter in law and pass along the recipe that her mother in law gave her. I sent it to my sister in law, though. I have it and so does she and someday we’ll give it to our daughters. That’s how family works. The treasure of generations moves forward one way or another. The little moments become the big ones and even when you’re gone, you pass it all down. You give it all away. Your dreams of putting smiles on your loved one’s faces still come true. My Grandma always says that the way to someone’s heart is through their belly. I think that’s true even when that someone is a person you only ever dreamt of.
